Daily 5 in First Grade

  • First grade is such a fun and exciting time in a young child’s life. Students are working on becoming better readers and more independent as well. The classroom structure first grade uses for reading is called Daily 5.

Daily 5 is a reading structure that helps teach independence while also helping children gain the skills they need to create a lifetime love of reading and writing. During this time, students choose in which order they would like to complete their rotations.

The different rotations consist of Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading and Word Work. While students are engaged in these rotations, I am able to work with small groups or conference one-on-one with an individual. The results are amazing and the children love it. I’m excited to see how these children grow even further throughout the rest of the year.
